Finish & Care
We match the finish to how each countertop will be used. Here is how we finish our tops, what to expect while they cure, and how to keep them looking their best. Every installation comes with written care instructions.
Waterlox: for sink areas
Waterlox Universal Tung Oil Sealer soaks deep into the wood, then two coats of H2OLOX topcoat cure into a waterproof film. It is our choice around sinks and other wet areas.
Curing: Keep the surface clear for 24 hours, and avoid all spills, water and cleaners for the first 7 days. Light use is fine after day 7, but do not leave pooled water or standing soap on it through day 30.
Cleaning: Use Waterlox Wood Surface Cleaner, or warm water with a mild, non-alkaline soap, and wipe dry. Skip dish soap, ammonia, bleach, all-purpose sprays, and wax.
Over time: A well-used finish typically lasts 7 to 10 years before it needs a refresh: a light scuff-sand and a fresh topcoat, with no stripping.
Rubio Monocoat: hardwax oil
Rubio Monocoat Oil Plus 2C bonds with the wood fibers instead of sitting on top as a film, so it keeps a natural, matte look and will not peel or flake.
Curing: Light use after 24 hours. Fully cured in 5 days.
Cleaning: Wipe up spills right away and clean with a damp microfiber cloth. Use Rubio Monocoat Soap or Surface Care Spray no more than once a week. Skip steam cleaners, abrasive pads, bleach, ammonia, and furniture polish.
Over time: Refresh dry or high-use areas with maintenance oil every 2 to 5 years. Scratches, water marks, and worn spots can be repaired one spot at a time, with no lap lines.
What to expect
Both finishes are safe for food contact once cured. Woodโs color mellows with light and age, and everyday use leaves small marks that become part of its character.
Use cutting boards and trivets. Neither finish is made to be cut on or to take hot pans directly. Nearly any wear can be repaired or refinished, so a well-kept wood countertop can be renewed instead of replaced.
